On a recent Van Nuys removal job the customer was having us clean out a cluttered garage. There’s obviously nothing wrong with that, but part of the junk we hauled away included some boxes that had been stored for so long the customer forgot what was in them.
When we inspected the boxes we found some flammable liquids and other materials that are considered hazardous. Of course we had to tell the customer that we could not take those items and that he needed to contact the proper agency to dispose of them properly. Simply tossing hazardous materials in a box (unintentionally or not) means that those items may make it to one of our local landfills. Toxic waste can eventually eat through containers or escape through holes and find its way to any aquifers below the landfill.
One of the ways we can determine how much space in our junk hauling trucks will be needed is by viewing a photo that the customer uploads on our website. If we see anything such as sealed boxes or containers or something we immediately recognize as hazardous we can quickly let the customer know before we ever arrive to haul things away.
When scheduling a junk pickup, make sure to check all your items before we arrive on the scene to make doubly sure there are no potentially dangerous things included. It doesn’t happen often but it’s something you should keep in mind. We do. We always will to make sure we keep our environment safe.
